All the diploma courses prepare students to operate as fully independent qualified practitioners after completion of the Diploma Course. Each course consist of several ITEC modules. Modules can be taken simultaneously or as separate courses, depending on the studytime available to the student. The module Anatomy & Physiology and the module Professional conduct & business awareness are core modules. Anatomy & Physiology is part of every Holistic Therapy diploma, for example Holistic Massage or Indian Head Massage. The exam for this module has to be successfully completed once. Professional conduct & business awareness is part of every Holistic Therapy diploma, as well as the Diploma for Beauty Specialists. Again the exam for this module has to be successfully completed once. For example: a student that has graduated with an ITEC diploma in Holistic Massage who would like to complete a diploma in Reflexology need only complete the Reflexology module. Core Module - Anatomy and Physiology/ ITEC Diploma in Anatomy & Physiology This module can also be taken as a separate Diploma and aims to give the student a thorough understanding of the major body systems and their function from a wellness concept. Systems covered are Skeletal, Muscular, Circulatory, Lymphatic, Neurological, Endocrine, Reproductive, Digestive, Respiratory and the Urinary system as well as the Skin. Some pathology will also be covered. Core Module - Professional conduct & business awareness For successful careers, students need skills to deal with clients in a professional manner and skills for setting up a professional practice while maintaining a high quality of practice. The topics covered include, setting up a professional therapeutic relationship, listening & observation skills, understanding the importance of personal growth & development as a practitioner, keeping records, documenting & evaluating practice, practical business implications, insurance, professional code of ethics & conduct, dealing with referrals & therapist self care. ITEC Diploma in Holistic Massage Students learn and experience how tension and stress from everyday life may be manifested unconsciously in the physical body. Students learn appropriate techniques to help clients to release. This course offers not only the practical aspects of massage, but also the psychological and emotional implications. This enables students to be aware of the clients needs and respond with appropriate techniques and practical silks. The theory covered by the Holistic Massage course includes contra-indications, physiological & psychological benefits of massage, the holistic approach, the history of massage, effects of massage on body image, stress syndrome & indications for massage therapy. The syllabus and teaching materials cover the six classical Swedish massages strokes, a fluent full body massage sequence, knowledge to identify muscle tension & its possible cause, information on posture and the use of body weight & gesture as well as case histories. To obtain the ITEC Holistic Massage Diploma, the modules on Anatomy & Physiology and Professional conduct & business awareness must have been completed successfully, but can be undertaken simultaneously. ITEC Diploma in Indian Head Massage Head massage has been practiced in the homes of oriental people for thousands of years. Recently it has become an extremely popular treatment in our parts of the world with increasing public demand. Treatments are given in a sitting position and can easily be adapted for many conditions, needing a minimum of equipment. Students gain insight into the effects and benefits of Indian Head Massage and learn the basic strokes and techniques to develop a full Indian Head Massage sequence with the emphasis on the therapeutic and relaxing properties of the treatment. Topics covered in this module include the history of Indian Head Massage, effects of Indian Head Massage on the various systems, contra indications, home care advice, the Holistic approach, referrals. Some home assignments including case histories have to be completed before the exam. To obtain the ITEC Indian Head Massage Diploma, the modules on Anatomy & Physiology and Professional conduct & business awareness must have been completed successfully, beforehand or simultaneously. ITEC Diploma in Reflexology This module enables students to carry out a reflexology treatment in a proficient, caring manner with full awareness of their clients needs. Students are strongly advised to complete the course on Anatomy & Physiology prior to commencing the module on Reflexology, as this is a prerequisite for participating in this course. The lessons on the theory of reflexology include the history of reflexology, the zones & their relation to the organs and organ functions, contra indications, possible client reaction to treatment, philosophy of complementary medicine, introduction to other natural therapies e.g. Herbalism, homeopathy, Aromatherapy. The practical lessons on Reflexology include external reading of the feet, techniques & sequences, interpretation of reflexes, hand reflexology, common complaints related to reflex areas, the feet— structure & disorders. There are some home assignments to complete including case histories. To obtain the ITEC Reflexology Diploma, the modules on Anatomy & Physiology and Professional conduct & business awareness must have been completed successfully. ITEC Diploma for Beauty Specialists Manicure & Pedicure Students learn a range of nail treatment techniques as well as acquire a broad knowledge of anatomy and physiology. The syllabus and teaching materials cover the anatomy & physiology of the lower arm and hand, as well as the lower leg and food. It also details the techniques and implements needed for Manicure & Pedicure. The syllabus and teaching materials also cover anatomy and physiologyof the skin, hair and the endocrine system of the body. As with Manicure & Pedicure, this module requires only ashort investment in study time leading to an immediate opportunity to practice waxing~ after successful completion of the exam. Skin Care & Eye Treatments This module covers skin analyses, superficial and deep cleansing, toning, pre-heat treatments, all about eyebrows including tweezing and eyelashes, facial hair bleaching and facial massage. The syllabus also covers Cosmetic Science and Anatomy & physiology (lessons on the skin, cell & tissue types, bones, muscles, neurology, the circulatory and lymphatic system The Skin Care & Eye Treatments module offer an immediate opportunity to practice ~ after successful completion of the exam. Make-Up The module on Make-Up takes the students to a deeper knowledge of the human skin and the technique of skin analysis. The syllabus covers contraindications to Make-Up, Make-Up techniques and applications and takes an in depth look into Cosmetic Science. The Make-Up module offer an immediate opportunity to practice ~ after successful completion of the exam. The module can be taken as a stand alone certificate or as part of the full diploma for Beauty Specialists. Post Graduate training For student who already hold an ITEC diploma or equivalent there is a range of post graduate and certificate courses available ITEC Diploma in Sports Massage Candidates wishing to attend this course must hold the ITEC Holistic Massage diploma or approved equivalent. The Sports Massage qualification supports the student in obtaining full Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance via the Embody organisation The sports massage qualification is designed to equip students with the skills to become competent and aware practitioners, technically and psychologically qualified for a career in Sports & Remedial Massage. The scope of practice includes treatment for athletes, addressing sports injuries, recovery from injury, pre & post event massage and preventative treatment. Techniques included in this course cover Neuromuscular, Muscle Energy, Soft Tissue Release, Connective Tissue Massage, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, Stretching and injury prevention & management. The application of all techniques is suitable for the general public as well as athletes, thus greatly widening the potential for practice. This course teaches Anatomy & Physiology focussed specifically on the origin & insertion of muscles, physiology of exercise & training principles., pathology relevant to the sports context incl. common sports injuries, inflammation & healing responses. . Students must be prepared to study at home for at least 5 hours per week. Practical case studies must also be completed (45–75 hours needed for completion approximately). ITEC Diploma in Hot Stone Massage Candidates wishing to attend this course must hold an ITEC Holistic Massage diploma or approved equivalent. This is an ITEC level 3 diploma that can only be taken as a post-graduate course. This module aims to give the student the understanding and ability to perform a full body massage incorporating the thermogenic benefits of heated basalt stones. The student will learn to identify the elements of proper handling of the stones including appropriate temperature, correct pairing, layout, care & cleansing. The students will also understand and be able to explain the many benefits associated with Hot Stone Therapy as part of their massage protocol. FOR ALL DIPLOMA COURSES: Home Work: Students will be given a monthly homework sheet. Each month, the previous month’s homework is to be submitted to the tutor in a homework folder. This folder must be submitted to the examiner at the practical exam so the homework should be submitted in a presentable manner. Submission of homework is mandatory. Assessments & ITEC exams: Each month there will be a multiple choice assignment that must be passed by each student each month. Pass mark is 60%. All assessments must be passed prior to the sitting of the ITEC course exams. Students that fail any assessments must re-sit the assessment on the assigned catch up dates. A student failing an ITEC exam may re-sit a maximum of 3 times. Additional fees will apply each time. Theory exams: 1hr, 50 Multiple Choice Questions (A&P ,PC & BA, theory of massage/ reflexology, etc) Practical exam: approx 1 hr includes oral exam. Case studies: A specified amount of case studies ( 9 – 40 depending on the course) have to be completed before students can participate in the practical exam.
